Special Administrative Board Selects Kelvin Adams for Superintendent of St. Louis Public Schools (posted September 26, 2008)

St. Louis—The Special Administrative Board of the St. Louis Public School District voted last night to offer a three-year contract to Dr. Kelvin Adams as the district’s next superintendent. The unanimous decision was made at the SAB’s regularly scheduled board meeting.

“We can document Dr. Adams’ hands-on role in improving student achievement, as well as his commitment to students,” said Rick Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer of the SAB. “He has an unblemished record, works hard, and is well respected for his work in New Orleans.”

Dr. Adams has held several roles since 1978, including teacher, middle school and high school principal, executive director, area superintendent and associate dean. Since 2007, he has held the position of Chief of Staff for the Recovery School District in New Orleans, Louisiana.

From 2006-2007, Dr. Adams was the Executive Director of Human Resources for St. Louis Public Schools. He was responsible for the recruitment, selection and retention of all district employees.

Dr. Adams received a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership in Administration from the University of New Orleans in 2005, a M.A. in Elementary Education from Xavier University in 1991 and a B.A. in Elementary Education and Special Education from Northeast Louisiana State University in 1978.

The national search for a permanent superintendent for the St. Louis Public School District began in April of this year. SAB members collected written surveys from parents and held community meetings to identify the criteria the St. Louis community wanted in a superintendent. The board then reviewed more than thirty applications from across the country.

After interviews with the three finalists, a public forum, site visits, and extensive background and reference checks, SAB members stated that they were confident that Adams was the best choice for St. Louis.

Dr. Adams will begin serving as the superintendent in mid-October, 2008. He currently resides in New Orleans. Courtesy of St. Louis Public Schools Home Page.

Welcome Dr. Kelvin Adams to St. Louis City

We welcome Dr. Kelvin Adams as the new Superintendent for St. Louis Public Schools. We want him to feel at home, to know that we value him, and to be assured that parents and other citizens of St. Louis City are fully behind him. We only ask him to spare no effort to give our children first class education and to reclaim the glory days of St. Louis Public Schools.

We believe we've had five superintendents since 2004 and we are fed up because our children are paying the price.

We request all citizens of this great city, our elected leaders, the clergy, the union rank and file, teachers, and other stakeholders to rally behind Dr. Adams so that he can institute a systemic reform. Dr. Adams, a young man definitely full of energy, has quite a good track record in New Orleans Recovery School Disrict (NOLA RSD) and we need to encourage him when he comes aboard so that he can hit the ground running and come out swinging to solve the myriad of problems that beset St. Louis Public Schools.

Please show your support for the new Superintendent by sending articles to be published on this blog and by posting comments. Our e-mail is supportsuptkelvinadams@gmail.com
